Mayotte is an overseas region and department of France, located in the Mozambique Channel in the Indian Ocean, consisting mainly of the islands of Grande Terre (Mayotte) and Petit Terre, near the island of Grande Comore, with Mamoudzou as its capital. As the most overseas department of France, Mayotte has a population of about 280,000, and the official language is French, with Mayotte (a Comorian dialect) being spoken. The local economy is based on agriculture (vanilla, coconuts), fishing and tourism, and has attracted some investment in recent years due to its French status. The climate is tropical and maritime, warm all year round, with unique natural features such as coral reefs and rich biodiversity.
