Sansha, Hainan, China: Pearl of the South China Sea, China's southernmost prefecture-level administrative region
Sansha City is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hainan Province, located in the South China Sea, and is the southernmost prefecture-level city in China in terms of geographic location, the largest in total area (including sea area), the smallest in land area, and the least populated. Established in 2012, the city has jurisdiction over the islands and reefs of the Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands and Nansha Islands, as well as their sea areas, with the municipal government stationed on Yongxing Island in Xisha, making it an important administrative and military management center for the islands in the South China Sea and the surrounding sea areas. Sansha has a vast sea area with rich marine resources, including coral reefs, tropical fish and seabirds and other unique ecology, and is also an important node of China's ancient Maritime Silk Road, with a significant strategic position.
