Historically, Masan was an independent city but merged with Changwon and Jinhae in 2010 and is now part of Changwon City, but retains its distinct regional identity. Known for its port and industrial base, Masan City is one of Korea's major manufacturing and trading centers, with particular strengths in machinery, shipbuilding and textiles.
Located along the coast of Masan Bay, Masan City has a natural harbor and has been a key port city for Korea's opening to the outside world since the early 20th century. The city has a dense industrial zone and has attracted investment from many domestic and foreign companies. In addition, Masan is known for its traditional fish market and modern facilities at the new port, combining history with contemporary economic vitality.
