Toftil is the second largest city in the Faroe Islands, located on the east coast of the island of Esturoy in the North Atlantic Ocean, with a population of about 2,000. An important administrative and commercial center, the town is known for the magnificent fjords and green mountains that surround it.
Toftil is situated at the end of a deep-water fjord and is surrounded by the highest peak in the Faroe Islands, Mount Sletara (880 meters). Surrounded by waterfalls, steep cliffs and traditional grass-roofed houses, the town is a popular starting point for hiking and bird-watching, and leads to the iconic sea arch "Gjógv".
The economy is based on fishing and shipbuilding, with the largest fishing fleet in the Faroe Islands. The Ólavsøka Cultural Festival, held every August, includes boat races and traditional dances. The town has a preserved 19th-century black church (Kirkja við Látrabjarg), which shows the fusion of Viking heritage and Nordic culture.
Connected to the western part of the island by a tunnel, Vogel Airport is only 5 kilometers away. Visitors can visit the Toftil History Museum or take a boat trip to the nearby Bird Island to see the puffin colony. Its unspoiled nature and peaceful atmosphere make it a stopover for Arctic Circle adventures.
