Tilak, Bolivia: Pearl of Indian Culture in the Highlands
Tilac is a small highland city in the department of La Paz, Bolivia, at an altitude of about 3,800 meters above sea level, nestled in the eastern foothills of the Andes Mountains, about a 3-hour drive from the capital city of La Paz. The city is known for its well-preserved Aymara culture and is one of the important Indian civilization sites in Bolivia. Tilac's old town retains its 16th-century colonial architecture, and hidden among the stone pavements and whitewashed walls are traditional handicraft markets featuring colorful textiles and pottery woven by local women. The terraced agricultural landscape around the city is set against the snow-capped mountains and attracts tourists who like to explore the original culture.
