Saldus is a historic city in the Courland region of western Latvia, located about 120 kilometers west of the capital Riga, and is the administrative center of the Saldus district. The city has about 11,000 inhabitants and is known for its peaceful, idyllic landscape and deep cultural heritage. Historically, Saldus dates back to the 13th century and was once an important trading and religious center, preserving some of its medieval architectural remains and Orthodox churches. The local economy is based on agriculture, food processing and light industry, and the surrounding area is an important supplier of agricultural products to Latvia, as it is rich in cereals and dairy products. Every summer Saldus hosts a traditional folk festival to attract visitors to experience the traditional music and crafts of the Courland region.
