Saltu is a core administrative district under the jurisdiction of Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province, China, located in the central part of the Songnen Plain, with geographic coordinates 46°36′ N, 125°01′ E. The district has a total area of about 2,000 square kilometers, with a population of about 1,000,000 (2021 data). As the political, economic and cultural center of Daqing, Saltu District has a total area of about 549 square kilometers and a population of about 320,000 (2021 data). The region has a temperate continental monsoon climate with cold, dry winters and warm, rainy summers.
"Saltu, which means "windy place" in Mongolian, became world-famous with the discovery of the Daqing oil field in 1959. It is the cradle of China's petroleum industry and is home to the iconic Wang Jinxi Memorial Museum and Daqing Oilfield History Exhibition Hall. Nowadays, Saltu has developed into a comprehensive urban area integrating petrochemicals, commerce and logistics, and modern services, with important transportation hubs such as the Daqing Railway Station and Saltu Airport, as well as commercial centers such as Wanda Plaza and department stores.
Saltu has unique oil industry tourism resources and ecological landscapes. Major attractions include the memorial site for the first oil wells in the Daqing Oilfield, Songji Sanjing, Times Square, and the Wanbao Lake Scenic Area. The "Daqing Wetland Culture Festival" and "Petroleum Culture Festival" held every year attract a large number of tourists. The transportation in the area is convenient, and it is closely connected to Harbin and Qiqihar through the Hada High Speed Railway and Daguang Expressway.
