Pingdingshan City is located in the central part of Henan Province of China, and is an important prefecture-level city in the province, situated in the transition zone between the western Henan Fuyao Mountain area and the Yellow-Huaikai Plain, with a total area of 7,882 square kilometers and a resident population of about 5 million. As an important node city of the Central Plains Economic Zone, Pingdingshan is famous for its coal industry, known as the "Coal Warehouse of the Central Plains", as well as its diversified industrial system of iron and steel, electric power and chemical industry.

Pingdingshan is one of the birthplaces of the Chinese civilization, with national attractions such as the Yao Mountain-Zhongyuan Buddha Scenic Spot (the world's tallest Buddhist statue), the Three Su Gardens (Su Shi's family cemetery), and the Xiangshan Temple.
