Ohrid: The "Pearl of the Balkans" in North Macedonia
Ohrid is a historic city in the southwestern part of the Republic of North Macedonia, situated on the shores of Lake Ohrid, across the lake from Predrac, Albania. Known as the "Pearl of the Balkans", the city is famous for its well-preserved medieval ruins and crystal-clear lake, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ohrid has 365 churches (the legend says that they are open every day of the year), among which the Byzantine architecture of the Church of St. Sophia and the Church of St. John Cannon is a treasure of art. Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in Europe, with a high degree of transparency, making it a swimming and boating destination in the summer, and quiet and picturesque in the winter. As one of the cradles of Slavic culture, Ohrid is a fusion of Byzantine, Ottoman and Slavic flavors, with old stone streets, traditional handicrafts and a vibrant history, making it one of the most attractive destinations in the Balkans.
