Moretai is a small town in Tauragė County in southwestern Lithuania, located on the banks of the Neman River, adjacent to the historic city of Raseniai. An important stronghold of Lithuania's cultural heritage, Moretai is famous for its 16th-century Catholic church and well-preserved traditional wooden buildings.
First recorded in history in 1253, Moretai was once a strategic fortress of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The town's most famous church, Holy Trinity of Moretai, built in 1529, is one of the oldest wooden churches in Lithuania, and its baroque altar and hand-painted frescoes are classified as a state-protected monument. The annual summer folk crafts fair attracts a large number of visitors to experience traditional weaving and amber working.
The town is situated on the Baltic coastal plain, surrounded by pine forests and lakes, with the tributaries of the Neman River providing abundant water transportation. The economy is based on agriculture and tourism, with specialties including linen and bee products. Moretai is also an important gateway to the nearby Racenière Castle and the Dubisa Regional Park.
Visitors can visit the Moretai Local History Museum to learn about the local history, enjoy the wetland landscape along the Neman River cycling route, or participate in the fall apple harvest festival. Located approximately 180 kilometers from Vilnius and easily accessible via the A12 highway, it is an ideal stopover for exploring the cultural heritage of southwestern Lithuania.
