The annual summer folk crafts fair attracts a large number of visitors to experience traditional weaving and amber working.

The town is situated on the Baltic coastal plain, surrounded by pine forests and lakes, with the tributaries of the Neman River providing abundant water transportation. The economy is based on agriculture and tourism, with specialties including linen and bee products. Moretai is also an important gateway to the nearby Racenière Castle and the Dubisa Regional Park.
