Kimchaek is an important industrial city in North Hamgyong Province of North Korea, located in the northeastern part of North Korea and facing the Sea of Japan to the east. Originally known as Seongjin Port, it was renamed in 1953 in honor of the anti-Japanese hero, General Kimchaek. As the center of North Korea's iron and steel industry, the city is one of the heavy industrial bases with large-scale enterprises such as the Kimtse Iron and Steel Works. Located at the northern end of the Hamgyeong Mountain Range, the city is surrounded by rich mineral resources, and port trade plays a significant role in the economy. With both industrial functions and the role of a regional transportation hub, Kimtse is an economic and strategic location in the northeastern part of Korea.
