Hukunzi is a town in northwestern Botswana, located on the southeastern edge of the Okavango Delta, under the jurisdiction of the Northwest Region. As an important gateway to the Okavango Delta, a World Natural Heritage Site, the area is known for its ecotourism and wildlife viewing.
Hukunzi is surrounded by savannah and wetland ecosystems and is adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve. The area is home to elephants, lions, hippos and hundreds of species of birds, with the animals gathering at the water source during the dry season. The climate is savannah, with lush vegetation during the rainy season (November-March) and a dry season (April-October) that is ideal for safari activities.
The economy is centered on tourism, offering wildlife safaris, canoeing expeditions and other specialties. The inhabitants are mainly indigenous communities such as the Hambukushu, who have retained their traditional crafts and village culture. The town's infrastructure is simple and relies heavily on the Mahon Airport as an external transportation hub.
Visitors are required to book professional guided tours in advance and observe the rules of the wildlife sanctuary. The best time to visit is during the dry season from May to October, and it is advisable to carry anti-malaria medication and sun protection gear. Hukunzi is a hidden gem of Botswana's eco-tourism with its pristine natural beauty.
