As a maritime hub of the ancient Silk Road, Hormuz was once famous for its pearl trade, and today it remains a key node for global oil transportation, undertaking the task of shipping large quantities of crude oil exports from the Middle East. The city has a hot and dry climate, a unique mangrove landscape and traditional fishing industry, a population that is mostly engaged in seafaring and trading, and a culture that blends Persian, Arab and African elements. Despite its small size, its strategic position makes it irreplaceable in the international energy landscape.
