Brava, Somalia: The "White City" on the shores of the Indian Ocean
Brava, a coastal city in the Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia, bordering the Indian Ocean, is known as "La White City" (White City), named after the white limestone used in its historical buildings. As one of the oldest ports in East Africa, it was once an important hub for Somali trade with Arabia and Persia, and has retained its distinctive Swahili architecture, blending Somali, Arab and Portuguese cultures.
