As the political, economic and cultural center of Brunei, the city is known for its tranquil Islamic atmosphere and modern facilities. It has a population of about 100,000 and covers an area of about 100 square kilometers.
The city's landmarks include the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque, symbolized by its golden dome and reflection in the lake; the Nuruloman Palace, the world's largest inhabited palace; and the water village of Kampong Ayer, known as the "Venice of the Orient," with a history of more than 1,000 years.
